Chapter 16: Cora and The Fort

“Now what?” Allie asked.

“We need to make a plan,” Mo replied.

“He’s probably watching and listening to us,” Brian said.

“You’re right. Let’s huddle up.”

Cora, Allie, Mo, and Brian moved closer, huddling in the middle of the room. Troy stayed near his stash, by the east bookshelf.

“He’ll kill one of us by sunrise,” Mo whispered.

“He can just shoot at us from above anytime he wants,” Brian whispered.

“What if we built a fort out of the books and furniture?” Cora whispered. “We could use the carpet as a roof. We could secure it with the books. Then, we could hide under it, and he wouldn’t be able to shoot us from the ceiling.”

Mo nodded. “That’s a good idea. That would force him to come down here. If that happens, we have a chance.”

Allie fidgeted, shifting her weight back and forth from her left foot to her right foot and back again. “A bullet can go through carpet.”

“I was thinking we could pile books on top,” Cora whispered.

Allie frowned. “Bullets can go through paper too.”

“Maybe not,” Brian whispered. “I saw this YouTube video where these guys were shooting these books. They called them Yellow Pages. The books were thick, but they did stop the bullets.”

“It’s better than nothing,” Mo whispered.

Allie still fidgeted.

Cora surveyed the room. Books littered the floor. In addition to the television Mo had ripped from the wall, two end tables and a floor lamp were turned over. “Let’s start by organizing this mess.”

“I have to pee,” Allie said.

“No bathroom,” Brian replied.

Allie scowled at Brian. “No shit.”

Cora pointed at the exposed stone where she and Mo had created a hole in the drywall and had removed the insulation. “That’s the best place to pee. Hopefully, it’ll filter down to the basement.”

Allie looked at the hole, her face puckered. “I’m supposed to put my bare ass in there and pee in front of everyone?”

“I can stand in front of you. We can make everyone turn around.”

Allie blew out a breath. “Whatever.” She stalked to the west wall and peered into the hole.

Cora grabbed her suit jacket and followed her.

“Everyone, turn around,” Allie said.

Mo and Brian faced Troy at the east wall.

“You too, Troy.”

Troy smirked. “Nothing I haven’t seen before.”

“Fuck you.”

Cora stood in front of Allie, holding out her suit jacket as a shield.

Allie removed her pantyhose and tossed them on the floor. Then, she pulled her underwear down to midthigh, hiked her skirt, and squatted into the hole on the wall.

Cora turned her head. Allie whizzed, the flow of urine strong, the ammonia smell powerful.

Allie pulled up her underwear and stood. “That’s it.”

“I can smell your piss from here,” Troy called out.

“You sure that’s not from pissing your pants?”

Brian faced Allie. “Are you dehydrated? That can cause a strong urine smell.”

Allie glared. “Shut up, Brian.”

Brian dipped his head and said in a barely audible tone, “I was just trying to help.”

The ammonia smell dissipated.

“I have to go too,” Mo said, taking his turn at the makeshift urinal.

After bathroom breaks, they stacked the books and straightened up the room.
